BRUSH TURKEY |
|
The Australian brush turkey is a large bird with black
feathers and a red head. Its total length is about 60–75
cm (23.5–29.5 in) and a wingspan
of about 85 cm (33 in). Brush turkey is a mound-building
bird that builds large nests on the ground made of
leaves, other compostable material,
and earth, 1 to 1.5 meters (3.3 to 4.9 ft) high and up
to 4 m (13 ft) across. Mound-building is done by a
dominant male, and visited by
a succession of local females, for mating and
egg-laying. The male works tirelessly, collecting
material from all around,and diligently
repelling
rival males, which are keen to usurp his position.

AUSTRALIAN PELICANS |
|
Australian pelicans have the
largest bill in avian world.
It is nearly 2 feet (0.5 m) in length. The sword-billed
hummingbird, with its 3.9-inch (10 cm) bill,
is the only bird with a bill that’s longer than its
body. Despite their
large size, Australian pelicans are so buoyant they
cannot sink under water.
Their pouch can hold a little over 3 gallons (11 liters)
of water. That is 2 to 3 times the amount they can hold
in their stomachs. |

Rock pigeons called "rats
with wings" are an amazing, intelligent species with a
short rush. Not only can they be trained to transmit
messages
over long distances, but researchers at Keio University
in Tokyo have discovered that they can also be trained
to distinguish paintings by
Monet, Picasso, Braque, Matisse, Cézanne and Renoir. Here's
one of the coolest facts about animals you probably
didn't know!
